Here's some of the pages from the educational strip I was doing a while back... I need to improve on how I draw animals and foliage.

New Cover, step by step....

The brief asked for Smantha Slade to be hanging from the edge of a tall building a bit like the shot from Blade Runner.

I knew it would be tough to get the pose right from this angle, so I used Poser. Poser is a simple 3d computer app that allows you to manipulate a figure into different poses you can then light it and set the camera up for the angle you want.

Having done this, I tweaked it a little in PS flipped it and printed it out light blue.

I then worked on it in pencil and scanned the pic back in to PS. I comped it into a still I'd found just for ref and a perspective guide. I sent this off to Matt for approval. Matt said the angle was right but wanted her to be hanging off part of the scales of justice from the Old Bailey, and to make the scarf more prominent. In the strip she'll be wearing a "sentient scarf".

I printed this all out artsize and inked in the figure and the part of the scale. I started getting a bit stuck on the background at this point as the imag was quite big it was quite difficult to not get bogged down in the detail of the bg buildings. I thought it might be easier to go for a looser approach. I scanned in the figure and scale, shrunk them to print size and printed them out light blue with some rough perspective lines. I then went straight in with inks and drew a load of buildings. With a white pentel correction pen and some toothbrush splatter I added a bit more detail and texture to it.



I Scanned this in and combined it with the previous inks and coloured it up.

Zodiac

Really enjoyed this, great acting and script . It's pretty retsrained for Fincher too in terms of his usual visual trickery but I think this is to the films benefit. The only annoying bit was Downey Jr ,he really gets on my nerves in most things he's in and this is no different. He mumbles and twitches his way through his scenes and ruins the believability of the film whenever he's on screen, at least he's not in it too much.

Spidey!

Just finished this for Spectacular Spiderman, Pencils by John Royle inks and colours by me, it was a lot of fun to do. I always enjoy working on John's stuff it's really dynamic and you get to do loads of big sweeping brush strokes it's nice and open for colouring too.

I really hope he doesn't mess about with it too much. Blade Runner is probably my favourite film. I first saw it when I was quite young and it just sort of stuck in my head, I've seen it countless times since. I love pretty much everything about the film the tone, the pacing, the music and especially the design. I read an interview with Scott a while ago about how he wants to cut bits out to speed it up a bit! I hope he doesn't stick in the hospital scene either, there's really no need for this scene as it just repeats info already given and the acting looks a bit dodgy by the guy playing Holden.

Character Sketches

Here's some character sketches I did a while back. They were done as part of a pitch with two Italian writers for a possible European album. It would have been fun. The story would have followed a group of gangsters from their beginnings in the seventies to the present day. It didn't get picked up though. I'd love to do a European album at sometime though it's my favourite format for comics. Something sci-fi would be cool.

Hiro

Here's a little section of a double page spread of Heroes I've just finished for SFX magazine. It was pretty tricky fitting them all in. I'll stick up the whole pic as soon as the mag is out.

Perspective

I love using perspective, even though it takes bloody ages, it can be really satisfyng building up a scene. I remember reading in a book on it ages ago that with two-point perspective neither of the points should be in the scene. Like some rules this will just stick in my brain and I'll always work to it. Anyway on my latest job I've been mucking about with the angles to jazz it up a bit and have started putting one of the points in the panel!!!

I've noticed you can get away with it if the points are far enough away and the point that's in panel is close to one of the edges., otherwise you start to get nasty distortion.

New Strip

Just got my copy of the latest Meg with my new strip in. Bit gutted tho as the printing has come out a bit odd, there's a funny fuzz arround the linework like it's been resized too much and a moire pattern on the tone. Probably my fault for sending in the files fulsize 600dpi. I did the tone on computer too so thought that would be alright.
It's annoying cos it took me ages and now feels like a bit of a waste of time...... ah well c'est la vie I guess.

I'm working on an educational strip in the day at the mo. Whilst it's quite fun to do nothing really beats sci-fi for me so here's some stuff from my spare time. They're only taking about 15 mins or so a panel so I may do some more.

Pinup Colours

I'm waiting on some stuff to be okayed so I thought I'd colour that Old Rose pinup. I did colour it ages ago but it was one of the first things I did on computer and not that great and I've lost the hi res version of it too. I've done some new sketches of her too I'll probably scan them in tomorrow.

Rose O'Rion

Here's a pinup and some pages from Rose O'Rion. I co-created her with Kek-W(Nigel Long) for 2000ad quite a few years ago now. I only drew her first episode. I would have loved to do more but my speed went against me a bit. I did ink her first and only series over some nice pencils by Andy Clarke. I really enjoyed having input into character design, I think I helped Andy on some of the aliens too, I'd love to do another rose strip but I think her time has passed. every now and then I come up with a new costume design for her and try and work out a cool story but never seem to get too far.

Warhammer

I'm scanning in some of my older stuff for safe keeping, I'll stick up some of my faves. here's a couple of pages from a Warhammer strip done a few years ago.

Big Door

Here's a panel from an upcoming strip, some of it's ok some of it's shit. I think I'll stick to inking for a bit it's lot less hassle and is far quicker than trying to draw.

Work Method

Seeing as I haven't put anything up for a while...

This is the way I work. I do a small rough about 80% of the printed page. I like working small as it seems easier for some reason. You can eyeball the whole page so prportions are easier to keep in check. Perspective at this size is simpler too as the vanishing points don't have to be so far away.

I then scan this into the computer and put the gutters in. On this page I moved one of the figures over in the middle panel too. I'll often scale up certain panels or move things around at this stage too. I then convert the image into a light blue colour and print it out artsize on the board. Really after this I should go straight to the inking stage but instead I mess about tightening bits up so it's less likely that I'll make mistakes in the inking.

I managed to get to life drawing this week, haven't been for a while. There's a class every Monday walking distance from my flat, which is cool. This one turned out ok.

Random Sketchbook Page

Just thought I'd stick this up. This is what most pages in my sketchbooks are like and it's pretty much the same as the way I used to fill up most of my exercise books in school, just loads of random images. Still fun to do though.

Klegg

Here's a sketch I did a while ago trying to come up with an Idea for a Dredd strip. Basically about a "juve" who finds a Klegg egg and ends up keeping him as a pet, couldn't come up with a decent plot though. If you look closely at the bottom panel you can see the kid fishing, this would have been where he found the Klegg egg.

Ah well the sketches idea didn't last long. I've been quite busy doing illos for the past couple of weeks but hopefully I'll get back to the sketches at some point. Here's a tryout I did for DC a while back I don't think it's going to see print, the colours won't as I just did them myself for fun.

More Stuff

Here's some more headshots and a cheesecakey figure shot of that Character. I'm still sticking to my safety zone of figures and faces at the moment hopefully as I go on I'll branch out a bit.

Batman

Here's another one then did it last night after I finished some inking. Don't quite know what's going on with his stomach and the cape but I quite like how the wall came out just done with a big fat marker that was running out and then some tippex on top. Done a little bit of photoshop on top of it too.

One of my fave characters to draw Batman, I did actually draw a strip about 9 years ago for a Batman 80 page giant, just my luck though Batman wasn't actually in it just a little cardboard silhouette of him. It was fun drawing ventriloquist though.

Sketches

In an effort to try and use my blog more and get better and faster at drawing. I'm gonna try and do regular sketches to put up here. I use a sketch book quite a bit and enjoy cos it's sort of non pressure drawing. The problem is I never really seem to get anything in them to any great level of finish and a lot of the stuff in there are just initial ideas for covers and page layouts which probably only make sense to me.

Anyway, here's the first sketch it's a character that a friend and I came up with years ago but recently started talking about maybe doing something with. I sketched it out pretty quickly in blue pencil then inking it roughly with brushpens.

Looking at it now up on screen it looks pretty ropey hopefully they'll get better as I do more.
