"meat" page 6 step by step.

The first pic is the thumbnail from my sketchbook. I changed my mind a bit on the first panel and did another little sketch along side. I scanned them in and added panel borders and perspective grids in Manga Studio. I can only find the top bit of pencils but you can still see the perspective grids from MS on it. I think I may have skipped the re scanning bit on the bottom half and just inked straight over tightened up bluelines. The latest Meg is out now so go buy it!

Step by Step

Seeing as it's not out for another couple of months I thought I'd do a step by step of one of the panels from the Dredd strip I did recently with Rob Williams.

The first stage is the tiny thumbnail from my sketchbook. I do the whole page very small and loose I'm probably the only one who can tell what's going on. I scan this into Manga Studio and then use the panel cutter tool to panel up the page. Then I may do a little bit of drawing, in MS, to make things a little clearer. I'll also put a perspective grid on. I still try and keep everything very loose at this stage as I like to print it out blue and do the pencilling on top.

Next is the pencilling, I've removed all the blue from this so the perspective grid isn't too visible any more. I then scan this in place it into the right panel . I'll do this with each panel on the page. Then convert the whole lot to blue and print out ready for inking...

Then to the last stage. I scan in the inks and put them under the panel border layer I created in Manga Studio. Then I colour the whole thing in Photoshop.

Another Step By Step

Diamond will be out soon! so here's another step by step.
I mixed up the way I did pages on the book quite a bit. This page was done by working on an A5 template of the page. I printed out quite a few of these so I could sketch down ideas while going through the script. I then did my usual method of blowing up to artsize printing out in blue and tightening up, then printing bluelines of the pencils and inking. Dunno what happened on this but for some reason my brush was working great doesn't happen often but it was a real joy to ink.

Step by Step

Here's a step by step for one of the pages in Diamond.
At the top is the initial rough for the page. This is what I'd send in for approval to the editor and writer of the book. They wanted a few changes to this one as it wasn't looking enough like a French album page. The first change asked for was to pull back a bit in panel one so that you could see full figures of both of the characters and also more of the surrounding room. The biggest change needed was for the last 2 panels. They wanted to see much more through the window and to really get across the feel of the surrounding village. At first I misunderstood this a little and sent my second rough showing a lot more of the bedroom, d'oh. The next stage is my pencils which have a sketchup model for the bus put on, I've started using stuff like this quite a bit.

Anyway this ended up being one of my favourite pages from the book and I'm glad I was pushed to change it quite a bit.
