Step by Step

Here's a step by step for one of the pages in Diamond.

At the top is the initial rough for the page. This is what I'd send in for approval to the editor and writer of the book. They wanted a few changes to this one as it wasn't looking enough like a French album page. The first change asked for was to pull back a bit in panel one so that you could see full figures of both of the characters and also more of the surrounding room. The biggest change needed was for the last 2 panels. They wanted to see much more through the window and to really get across the feel of the surrounding village. At first I misunderstood this a little and sent my second rough showing a lot more of the bedroom, d'oh. The next stage is my pencils which have a sketchup model for the bus put on, I've started using stuff like this quite a bit.

Anyway this ended up being one of my favourite pages from the book and I'm glad I was pushed to change it quite a bit.

Woohoo!! Finished Diamond!

Here are some sketches with a little promo done for fun.

Diamond

Well, this is what I've been working on all these past months, 3 pages to go now. It's scheduled for release January 20th. I love how the colours have come out on this thanks to Christophe Araldi and Xavier Basset for a great job! Thanks to David Chauvel for being a brilliant editor too! This and all the other pics I've posted relating to Diamond are copyright Delcourt and the authors(me and Christophe Bec). Over the next few months I'll stick up some more teaser panels and some process stuff relating to the pages.

Was a bit of fun anyway. Thing that annoys me about the Matrix sequels was that there was probably a semi decent and action packed 2hr film hidden in the 4hrs+ of the two films.

I've joined twitter and have been posting a few bits via twit pic here they are. They're mostly from digi cam so the quality is a little low.

Random...

Blue

Here's a neat trick in photoshop...

I scan my pencils in in colour. As you can see the blue underdrawing is still visible. I then click on the blue channel in the channels pallette and ta-daaa! the blue is gone. The I convert the image to greyscale discarding all the other channels. Dunno why but it's really satisfying. I then print the pencils out in blue so that I don't have to worry about the inks fading when erasing pencils.
